Streaming video with ONVIF and RTSP to a Video Management System

The Alcatraz Rock supports streaming video for integration with Video Management Systems (VMS) using the ONVIF standard and RTSP. This article provides detailed instructions on how to configure and manage ONVIF settings for streaming.

The ONVIF credentials are also used to access the Rock device's Web UI. Disabling ONVIF also disables the Web UI.

Steps to Enable ONVIF for Video Streaming

  1. Navigate to Device Management and select Devices.
  2. Click on the Name of the Rock to access its information page.
  3. Click Setting->Modify to open the configuration settings.

  4. Scroll down to Device Configuration and expand the ONVIF section.

ONVIF Configuration Options

To enable ONVIF, turn on the Activate ONVIF toggle. You will then be presented with two options for managing ONVIF credentials:

Option 1: ONVIF Credentials Managed via the ONVIF Protocol

• If you select this option, you can manage the access to the device's ONVIF stream using your Video Management System (VMS). You can also use the device's default credentials (or the credentials you replaced them with using the ONVIF Credentials Managed via the Platform option):

Username: admin

Password: {The last 6 characters of the Hardware ID}

To find the last 6 characters of the Hardware ID, go to the Devices page, locate the Rock you are configuring, and click on the Rock’s name. The Hardware ID is displayed as shown in this screenshot.
We recommend replacing the default credentials with a new, permanent set after you on-board the device.

Option 2: ONVIF Credentials Managed via the Platform

• If you choose to manage the credentials through the platform, the default ONVIF configuration will be replaced.

• After selecting this option, input fields will be displayed, allowing you to create and manage new credentials for accessing the video stream.

• This option provides greater flexibility in managing security credentials for the video stream.

You can keep using the new credentials even if you switch to the ONVIF credentials managed via the ONVIF protocol option.

5. After selecting the appropriate ONVIF credential option and entering the necessary details, click Submit to confirm the changes:

6. Add the Rock to your VMS:

The Rock supports Video Management Systems (VMS) that adhere to the ONVIF standard. Use the username and password configured above when adding a Rock to your system.

RTSP Streaming

The Rock also supports RTSP (Real-Time Streaming Protocol), which can be used to stream video to a compatible platform.

The following RTSP streams are available:

  • rtsp://<ROCK_IP>:554/rgbcamera
  • rtsp://<ROCK_IP>:554/ircamera
  • rtsp://<ROCK_IP>:554/depthcamera

ONVIF / RTSP Notes

  • Frame rates can only be configured in the VMS. You cannot set frame rates on the Rock or in the Admin Portal.
  • The Rock does not support changing the image resolution.

By following these steps, you can successfully enable video streaming using ONVIF or RTSP and connect the Rock to your preferred Video Management System. For further assistance, feel free to contact Alcatraz support.

Replacing the Default Credentials

We recommend replacing the default credentials with a new, permanent set after you on-board the Rock device.

The following Alcatraz Admin Portal roles can change the ONVIF/Web UI credentials:

  • Account Administrator
Take these steps to replace the default ONVIF/Web UI credentials:
  1. Log in to Alcatraz Admin Portal as a supported role.
  2. In the left menu, go to Device Management > Devices.
  3. Click the device that you want to manage.
  4. Click Settings > Modify.
  5. Expand the ONVIF section.
  6. Ensure that Activate ONVIF is toggled on.
  7. Click ONVIF credentials managed via the platform.
  8. In the message windows that appears, click Yes, proceed.
  9. Enter credentials to replace the default credentials.
    • You can change both the username and the password.
    • Only use printable ASCII characters for the username and the password.
    • The password must beat least six characters long.
  10. Click Submit at the bottom of the page to apply the new credentials.

After changing the default credentials, you can keep using them for ONFIV/Web UI access even if you switch to credentials managed by your Video Management System (VMS) (ONVIF credentials managed via the ONVIF protocol option).
