How to Update Firmware on the Alcatraz Rock Device

Updating the firmware on your Rock devices ensures they are running the latest features and fixes. Follow the steps below to update your firmware.

1. Check Available Firmware Versions

  1. Go to Device Management and select Updates.

  2. Click on the Firmware tab.

  3. A table displaying all available firmware versions will appear. On-prem users will need to select  + Add Firmware to upload the latest firmware version. 

2. Update Firmware on a Single Device

  1. Navigate to Device Management -> Devices.

  2. Select the device you want to update by clicking on its name.

  3. On the device’s information page, click Settings -> Firmware Update.

  4. The Schedule an Update page will appear:

Select Firmware Version: Choose the firmware version from the dropdown.

Add Update Name: Enter a unique name for this update.

Set Start Time: Choose whether to update immediately or schedule for later.

Click Submit to begin the update.

Firmware Upgrade Progress

  1. Rocks check in with the server every five minutes to see if an update is pending, so it could be up to five minutes before the firmware starts to download.
  2. Firmware download times will vary based on the network speed between the Rock and the server. Rocks will continue to operate normally while the firmware is downloading.
  3. Once the firmware is downloaded, the Rocks will apply the upgrade and reboot. The Rock will be offline and unable to authenticate while rebooting.


3. Monitor the Update Progress

  1. After submitting, go to the Updates page and check the Update Status tab.


4. Verify the Update

  1. After the update is completed, the status will show as Finished (green bar).

  2. Verify the updated firmware version under Device Management -> Devices.

5. Bulk Update Multiple Devices

  1. Navigate to Device Management -> Devices.

  2. Select multiple devices by checking the boxes next to their names.

  3. Click on Bulk Actions and choose Schedule an Update.

  4. Follow the same process as a single device update and click Submit.

  5. Monitor the bulk update progress under the Updates -> Update Status tab.

Important Notes

  • Ensure the Rocks remain online during the update.
  • The Rock will reboot during the update and be offline for approximately 60 seconds.
  • Failed updates can be reattempted by scheduling a new update.
