To change the network configuration or connect the Rock to a different server, a QR code is used.
New Alcatraz Rocks are pre-configured for DHCP and set to connect to the Alcatraz multi-tenant cloud server (US). However, if static IPs or connection to a different Alcatraz Platform server are required, you can generate and use a QR code to change the Rock’s network settings.
Enable QR Code Activation on the Rock
In order for the Rock to read a QR code, the Activate QR Code setting must be enabled. New Rocks and Rocks that are Factory Reset will have this setting enabled by default.
When this setting is activated, a QR code icon will be displayed on the Rock’s screen, indicating it is ready to read QR codes.
If this icon is not displayed and the Rock is online, an administrator of the Alcatraz system can enable this setting in the Admin Portal. More details can be found here.
If the QR code icon does not display, and the Rock has been deleted from the Admin Portal or cannot be brought back online in the Admin Portal, performing a Factory Reset will reset all settings and enable the QR code reading feature again.
Generate a QR Code for Network Settings & Server Location
Follow these steps to generate a QR code with the Rock's desired network settings and Platform server.
1. Log in to the Admin Portal:
-
- Go to
Device Management
and selectQR Code
from the left-hand menu.
- Go to
2. Server Location/Domain:
-
- Select Alcatraz AI Cloud Hosted or Customer Hosted Server based on your system. Typically, if you are logged into the Admin Portal where your Rocks will be onboarded, the correct URL or IP Address will automatically populate.
-
-
- Alcatraz AI Cloud Hosted - us.alcatraz.ai
- Alcatraz AI Cloud Hosted (Enterprise) - The URL will be provided by Alcatraz.
- Customer Hosted Server - The URL or IP address of the server running the Alcatraz Platform software.
-
3. IP Network Addressing:
-
- Select IPv4 and/or IPv6 addressing, based on your network configuration.
-
- Choose DHCP for automatic IP assignment, or select Manual to enter a static IP address, subnet mask, DNS server, and default gateway.
4. NTP Server
-
- The Rocks require a valid NTP server.
- Use the default, public NTP server provided, if it is accessible from the local network, or enter a local NTP server.
5. Device Type
-
- Rock - No additional settings are required.
- Rock X - Ethernet is the default connection method. If this is selected, no other settings are required.
- WiFi (WPA2) - You must also enter the Network Name, Passphrase, and Confirm Passphrase.
6. Generate the QR Code:
-
- Once the settings are confirmed, click
Generate
to create the QR code.
- Once the settings are confirmed, click
Applying the QR Code to the Rock
Once the QR code is generated, follow these steps to apply it to the Rock:
1. Display the QR Code:
-
- Print the QR code or display it on a phone, tablet, or laptop. Ensure that the image is as large and bright as possible.
2. Scan the QR Code with the Rock:
-
- Hold the QR code about 6 to 9 inches away from the Rock’s camera.
- Slowly move the QR code closer or farther away until you see a green checkmark on the Rock’s display, indicating that the QR code has been successfully read.
3. Confirmation of Settings:
-
- After the QR code is scanned, the new network settings will scroll across the bottom of the Rock’s display, confirming that the settings have been updated.
Important Considerations
- Correct Information: Ensure that the network settings and server locations are entered correctly when generating the QR code. Incorrect information will prevent the Rock from connecting to the Alcatraz AI Platform and block onboarding.
- Network Ports and Whitelisting: Make sure that all required network ports are open, and the necessary URLs are whitelisted for either Cloud or On-Prem setups.
- QR Code Activation: Always verify that the Activate QR Code feature is enabled before taking the Rock offline for network changes.
